Okaloosa County commissioners repealed a Crab Island vessel exclusion zone due to high maintenance costs and shifting sands. The zone, established in 2015, was intended to provide emergency vessel access but is no longer used by emergency responders. The shifting sands have made the zone too shallow for most vessels, and the buoys marking the zone have been costly to maintain. Emergency services now utilize jet skis and shallow-draft vessels, rendering the exclusion zone unnecessary.
