BURLINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — What will be remembered as a historic and tremendous year for Laney baseball ended two wins shy of a title after falling to T.C. Roberson in the Class 4A baseball championship series in two games. The Rams beat the Bucs 12-0 in game one in six innings. Then they won 8-7 in game two to take home their third consecutive state championship. After sleeping off a bad opening loss Friday night, Laney was motivated going into Saturday’s game two.

Ashley girls soccer will play in the Class 4A championship game for the third year in a row after losing the previous two. This time around, the group is closer than ever before. “We all just have the same goals in mind,” senior Maryn Harris said. “We all have the passion to do our best individually and play our best for our teammates as well.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The WWAY Student Athlete of the Week is Sarah Brannin from Ashley High School. Brannin is a member of the girls soccer team, who are set to play in their third consecutive state title game. That will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday in Matthews against Ardrey Kell, the same school that knocked Ashley out of the finals in 2023. The junior defender has been a part of all three squads that reached the Class 4A championship, but insists it is not an easy thing to do.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Ashley girls soccer will play for the Class 4A state championship after taking down Millbrook 2-0 on Tuesday. In the final minutes of the 1st half, Kieran Bradley drew a foul that resulted in a penalty kick. She converted it to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break. With the rain starting to come down hard, Savannah Manset scored a goal early in the 2nd half on a shot that redirected off of the Wildcat keeper’s shoulder.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Just a year since their inaugural season began, one area club has earned a major milestone. Port City FC has announced their women’s team will be promoted from the WPSL to the USL W League beginning in the 2026 season. To simplify, it means the team goes from AA competition to AAA. Another promotion would officially make them a professional soccer team. The organization began play with a men’s team in 2022 with the women’s club starting up last summer.
