    A new investigation into the killing of Clodagh Hawe and her three children by her husband in Co Cavan in 2016 has found the initial inquiry mishandled CCTV evidence and missed digital evidence in the case. A garda review has uncovered the new information not known at the time of the inquests into their deaths in 2017. The serious crime review team - or Garda cold case - investigation was established in 2019 and the family of Ms Hawe have been briefed on its findings.

    The recruitment competition to appoint the next Garda Commissioner has begun, with the role advertised online on Friday by the Public Appointments Service (PAS). Candidates with no policing experience are eligible to apply, including people from abroad or Irish citizens based overseas. “Applications are welcomed from candidates of an appropriate calibre from policing, security or civilian backgrounds,” the newly released advert for the new role states.

Gangs have long used pipe bombs against each other, however, especially in Dublin. Those involved in the drugs trade have also been very quick to embrace drone technology to deliver contraband into jails.

    Gardaí investigating efforts to drop a pipe bomb from a drone on to a house in north Dublin are fearful the gangland feud the incident is linked to will now escalate sharply. Garda sources said the device was being examined by the force’s ballistics and technical experts to pinpoint any evidence that may identify who constructed or handled the pipe bomb. The drone was also being technically examined.

    Anyone wearing a face mask, or any face covering, can be told to remove it once a garda “reasonably suspects” its use is intimidatory or intended to make it easier to commit a crime and avoid detection. If the request is met by a refusal, the individual will be committing a criminal offence and can be arrested and prosecuted. The proposed legislation is being brought to Cabinet for approval today by Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan.
