Downtown Golden was absolutely packed on June 14. That’s typical of a summer Saturday afternoon. But this time, along with numerous residents, employees and visitors, there were thousands of protesters lining Washington Avenue from Highway 58 to 19th Street. As part of the nationwide “No Kings” protest, an estimated 2,000 people from Golden, Lakewood and other parts of the western Denver area voiced their concerns about President Donald Trump and his administration’s actions in recent months.

After years of planning and fundraising, Golden’s Shelton Elementary School finally has a new playground. The school was hosting community build days June 12-13, where current and former students, parents, staff members and other volunteers — about 30 people total — were installing new jungle gym equipment. The previous playground, which was original to the 30-year-old school, didn’t have a slide, seesaws and other popular features.

Whatever the Lions Park playground might look like in a year or two, Goldenites definitely want the area to have plenty of shade. Like a fine wine, Golden has arguably gotten better with age. On June 16, the former territorial capital marks 166 years since its founding, traditionally called Golden Day. The City Council marked the occasion with an annual proclamation at its June 10 meeting. In 1859, George West and other members of the Boston Company established Golden City. “City” was dropped from the town’s title in January 1872.

Rising river levels promoted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Golden Police Department to implement red flag restrictions as of noon June 9, closing Clear Creek to swimming and tubing. These restrictions extend from Jeffco’s western edge through Golden city limits, including Vanover Park, according to a June 9 Sheriff’s Office press release. Under red flag restrictions, only kayaks, whitewater canoes, multi-chambered professionally guided raft and riverboards may operate in the creek.
