University of Cincinnati expands student housing as students prep for return

Many colleges across the country have faced a campus housing crisis, causing families to make some tough decisions. However, the University of Cincinnati has gotten aggressive with the investment of nearly $200 million over the past couple of years to address the issue.The official reopening of Siddall Hall, an $85 million renovation project, will provide much needed space for a booming student population.

With less than two weeks from the start of school in Cincinnati she spoke one-on-one with WLWT’s Courtis Fuller about some of her top priorities. “This is something I am ready for (and) this is something that I am hungry to do,” Murphy said. As she gears up for a school year full of change and challenges, the issues of budget and transportation are top priorities.

Officials seeing increase in EBT fraud as scammers target benefit cards

A disturbing scam is taking food money out of the pockets of people who need it most. People who receive Supplemental Nutritional Assistance, better known as SNAP benefits, are being warned to keep their guard up as scammers target the benefit cards. Arlene Williamson said in six months, she saw nearly $2,000 wiped out of her EBT account. "I never thought about that, that I would be a victim but I was," Williamson said.
Cincinnati police protecting festivities as city celebrates Pride weekend

One of the largest Pride celebrations in Greater Cincinnati began Friday night. Hundreds of people turned out in the Queen City for a festival downtown, leading up to a huge Saturday parade. This comes one month after the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a public service announcement to heighten awareness of the potential targeting of LGBTQ events. “That’s the biggest priority here, is that everyone feels safe and comfortable,” Jake Hitch with Cincinnati Pride said.
Young Entrepreneur pitch competition designed to teach business, wealth building

It is a grassroots program aimed at closing the wealth gap. “We learned a significant disparity in the amount of funding that venture capital firms invested in entrepreneurs of color. So in 2019, actually there were 136 and a half billion dollars that went to entrepreneurs in general and only 1% of that went to African Americans,” Evangelina Figeueroa said. Figeueroa is the director of operations of the Abercrumbie Group that started the program in 2012.

The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio kicked off Juneteenth by taking a close look at the state of "Black Cincinnati."The organization released its first report on the topic in nine years on Wednesday. It was a comprehensive look at where the city stands on race relations, housing, health disparities and life expectancy, among other things. The report examined a wide range of issues and the harsh reality of a city in which citizens live in conditions that are far from equal.
Cincinnati police sponsor summer bowling program to help stop youth violence

A program is helping to keep young people in the right lane. A local police officer is proving that bowling is more than a game.“Actually, this is what kept me out of trouble. I grew up here in Madison Bowl and have been bowling since I was 9 years old,” Anthony Mitchell said.Mitchell is a 19-year Cincinnati police sergeant. He runs this summer bowling program for young people.He said it’s a way to give youth something positive to do.
