Strawberry growers in Virginia were impacted by the early April cold snap, but despite the setback, are optimistic about the season. Pick-your-own strawberry locations throughout the state opened this weekend. “It’s like prepping for a big game,” said Tyler Wegmeyer of Wegmeyer Farms in Loudoun County. “When it dropped to 22 degrees, it zapped a lot of blooms that would’ve been strawberries in 30 days.”Farmers, especially those in Northern Virginia, are used to managing losses from late frosts.

An emergency has been declared at a Virginia pond due to the imminent failure of the dam, and state agencies are working on stabilization to prevent further damage. Staff members from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources were dispatched to the dam at Gardy’s Millpond near the Westmoreland and Northumberland counties border on Saturday. The dam is located on the Hampton Hall Branch, a tributary of the Yeocomico River which flows into the Potomac River.

The Shenandoah Valley has a high risk of flooding due to a slow-moving storm that will impact Virginia over the next few days. A flood watch has been issued starting tonight and running through Tuesday at 8 p.m.The flood watch region encompasses portions of central, northwest and western Virginia including the counties of Augusta, Rockingham, Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, Madison, Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren.

A Richmond man was sentenced this week for drug trafficking after selling cocaine and fentanyl to an undercover agent. Demario Avanti Henderson, 39, was sentenced Thursday to seven years in prison for drug trafficking and for possessing a firearm in relation to a drug crime. According to court documents, on Jan. 16, 2024, law enforcement conducted a controlled purchase of fentanyl from Henderson. On Jan. 24. 2024, agents arranged another controlled purchase where Henderson sold cocaine and fentanyl.

Shenandoah National Park has selected seven artists for its annual artist-in-residence program. This program gives artists an opportunity to creatively explore the Shenandoah National Park’s natural and cultural resources and pursue their artistic discipline. Each artist will spend three weeks in SNP and create an original piece reflecting the experience to donate to the park. Artists also present public programs about their art and their residencies.

The City of Waynesboro is looking at the safety and operations on U.S. 340 in the Town Center corridor, and it wants input from the public through a survey. A survey has been launched looking at the area from Grandview Drive to Northgate Avenue, including P. Buckley Moss Drive and Rosser Avenue. The corridor includes several crash hot spots, the most notable at the intersection of Rosser Avenue, Lew Dewitt Boulevard and Windigrove Drive.

A new World War II exhibit is inviting you to step back in time with its opening on Saturday at 10 a.m.The “Threads of War: Industries, Memories and the People of Waynesboro” opening at the Heritage Museum will include a WWII Jeep and other pre-war vehicles on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.Home front reenactors will be on hand to discuss life in Waynesboro during the war. Two former Bureau of Prisons officials were sentenced this week for their roles in the death of an inmate in their custody in 2021. A third person was previously sentenced for his role in the inmate’s death. Shronda Covington, 49, a former BOP lieutenant, was sentenced Wednesday to one year in prison, one year of home confinement and three years of supervised release.
