Golf charity event to raise money for Wells County Community Cares

HARVEY, N.D. (KMOT) - Harvey First Lutheran Church is hosting its second annual “Chip in for mental health charity golf event” fundraiser on Sunday. Ted Sitz, one of its organizers says this year’s proceeds will go towards the Wells County Community Cares organization. He said Community Cares will distribute funds to help people using mental health services who are struggling to make payments. Some things to look forward to are a dinner and three dollars for every unlimited mulligan you take.
Minot City Council declines a proposal to build infrastructure on lots

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - The Minot City Council voted down a proposal this week to fund the infrastructure of possible housing developments. The proposal called for the city to cover $17,000 per lot to install sewer, water, utilities and the like east of 55th Street Southeast. Multiple council members questioned whether this type of investment for developers would lead to lower housing costs and the number of years it would take for future property owners to pay it back through special assessments.

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - The City of Minot’s Puppy Dog Coulee storm sewer project is in the process of negotiating easements to complete the construction. City Engineer Lance Meyer said the city needs easements to reroute culverts by Hotel Revel and Pacific Sound, so the upcoming sewer system is enhanced. He said right now, the essential materials needed for the construction are taking much longer to get.

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - If you’re ever curious about air quality near you, there are ways to find out. Adrienne Sandoval, air and radiation division director for EPA Region Eight, said the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality has strategically placed nine air quality monitors throughout the state based on population and weather data. She said the devices monitor for six criteria pollutants. Sandoval said the AirNow website gives good information and even has a fire and smoke map.
Minot City Council vote ties for land purchase proposal

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - This week, the new-look Minot City Council voted on whether to purchase land for future use down the line if their current facilities run out of space. But, the votes ended in a tie. City manager Harold Stewart said a property owner offered to sell land near city facilities to the city. He said $920,000 from the enterprise funds would be used to make the purchase.

WARD COUNTY, N.D. (KMOT) - Ward County elections officials held a recount for multiple city park board races on Monday. County Auditor Marisa Haman said they recounted park board votes for five towns including Ryder, Surrey and Berthold because there were ties. After the recount, if it’s still tied, the winner is picked via random draw, which Haman said some of the write-in candidates are not aware of until the county reaches out to them about the opportunity.
Horse driving clinic coming to Underwood

UNDERWOOD, N.D. (KMOT) - If you have a horse and would like to learn a different way of traveling with the animal, there’s a chance this weekend to learn how. Valerie Hicks, a horse rescuer from South Dakota, is coming to Underwood on Saturday to teach people how to drive horses. She said riders will get hands-on practice harnessing carts onto ponies, both of which she’ll provide, and in the afternoon session, participants can practice on their own horses and start to train them.

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - The MHA Interpretive Center brought an array of performers to the stage at its first “Music of the Plains” festival. The first annual “Music of the Plains” started with a talk from keynote speaker, activist and author Mark Charles. He is touring with the National Parks Service’s Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Lois Rainbow, one of the audience members, said she enjoyed what Charles shared.
Third street bridge in Minot to remain closed amid safety concerns

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - A Minot bridge by Third Street and Central Avenue will remain closed due to concerns over its safety. At Monday night’s City Council Meeting, City Engineer Lance Meyer said concrete on one of the piers looks like it’s deteriorating. He said they’ve reached out to the North Dakota Department of Transportation to assess damages on the bridge before it’s repaired. City Manager Harold Stewart said the bridge was scheduled to open this Wednesday.
Occupational therapy drive for Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports happening during July

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - A local business is in the middle of a three-month drive for Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports this summer. Prairie Grit does more than adaptive sports. They also offer a variety of therapies for minors with disabilities. During the first month in June, Aspire Credit Union collected a host of foods for the organization’s feeding therapy program. This month, the drive will focus on items used for occupational therapy.
