BLOOMINGTON — Nineteen students, headed off to college this coming year, received dozens of scholarships from 14 local organizations at Saturday's annual Joint Scholarship Celebration at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. The celebration is hosted by the Mentoring and Providing Scholarships Program, a local non-profit that mentors young people as they navigate high school into college.

Cooking can be intimidating; I get that. Whether you're cooking on the stovetop, in an oven or over an open fire (stay tuned), you run the risk of overcooking or undercooking, improperly seasoning or running into any myriad ways to ruin a dish, e.g., last year's duck fiasco, detailed in this very column. A lot of times, though, you don't need to introduce heat and chemical changes to enjoy food. The simplest way is to enjoy it as it is.

The Bloomington-Normal Community Air Research and Education (BNCARE) issued an air quality alert Thursday for the Bloomington-Normal area, citing a high level of pollutants in the air.

The two elected officials held an informational social Wednesday afternoon with dozens of downtown business owners in the early stages of creating such a board and to give an update on downtown's revitalization.

BLOOMINGTON — The two largest school districts in McLean County will be offering free summer meals for those 18 and under while school is out for the season. Bloomington District 87 and McLean County Unit 5 will have free meals this summer on weekdays at more than a dozen locations throughout Bloomington and Normal. Five locations — Irving, Sheridan and Stevenson elementary schools, Bloomington High School and the Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal — will offer both breakfast and lunch.
