Derry Girls actor Nicola Coughlan reveals she accidentally fell asleep during filming

Derry Girls actor Nicola Coughlan has revealed to Elle magazine that she was genuinely asleep during one of the scenes. Coughlan said that the cast would sometimes indulge in a few glasses of wine in the evenings and so she would occasionally be found taking a nap on set.

A volunteer with the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) has shared how she ‘absolutely loves’ working with the team and giving back to her community. Laura McFadden has been a member of the team for four years now and has been the voluntary public relations officer for two years. She shared her experience with the ‘Journal’ as the organisation invites new people to join the team. “I absolutely love volunteering with the team,” Laura said. “It can a lot of work at times but it’s totally worth it.

Derry artist Reevah – or Aoife Boyle as she’s also known as – has shared her delight at being selected to perform at a festival in Texas this March. South by South West, often abbreviated to SXSW, takes place in Texas, America, on March 8-16 and celebrates the bets of tech, film, music, education, and culture. Reevah shared the ‘massive news’ on her social media platforms, stating that it was ‘the hardest secret to keep’.
Police appeal for information after cattle trailer stolen from Artigarvan

Police are investigating a report that a cattle trailer was stolen from a farmyard on Moorlough Road in Artigarvan sometime between 7pm on Tuesday, 23 January and 3.15pm yesterday, Wednesday, 24 January. Police are urging anyone who saw the Nugent trailer (VRM N24 EWE), or knows of its whereabouts to get in touch. They're also keen to hear from anyone who is offered a trailer like this for sale in suspicious circumstances to call them.
2,000 year old body of boy aged 13-17 found in bog in Bellaghy in County Derry

Archaeologists within the Police Service of Northern Ireland, have uncovered ancient human remains carbon dated as old as 2,000-2,500 years. The Archaeological Unit within the PSNI’s Body Recovery Team made the discovery during excavations, after being alerted to human bones on the surface of peatland in Bellaghy in October 2023. Detective Inspector Nikki Deehan said: “On initial examination, we couldn’t be sure if the remains were ancient or the result of a more recent death.
Derry businessman making pizza by the slice in the heart of city centre

Derry man Declan McConnellogue has returned to his hometown to open his business selling pizza by the slice. Walled City Slice opened seven months ago on Bishop Street when Declan and his partner Sue moved back to Derry after living in Donegal for a number of years. A self-taught baker, Declan ran a modern bakery in Carrigart where they made bread, sandwiches and pastries.

Recent government data analysed by CompareNI.com shows there were 10,882 potholes recorded in Derry City and Strabane in 2023, the fourth highest of any council area in the north. Potholes are a frustrating and dangerous problem for drivers. With more bad weather to come this winter, and the cost-of-living crisis pushing car insurance premiums up, motorists run an increased risk of costly incidents if potholes continue to increase.
Man extradited from America to appear in Derry court on indecent assault charges from 1970s

Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s International Policing Unit have extradited a 67 year-old man from the United States of America where he had been arrested on an international warrant for 12 indecent assault offences that occurred in the 1970's. Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: “We continue to work with our International Law Enforcement partners to bring offenders before the courts.
