The former secondary school teacher from Stranocum has spent the last seven years running a restaurant in Siem Reap alongside genocide survivor Tevy Moung, where they teach women from impoverished villages catering, finance management and English and Khmer literacy. He sees his role primarily as supporting Tevy’s lead. He has “no financial interest in it” but has gained a “powerful sense of purpose”. “The main focus is very much about empowering women.

A County Derry man is leading the growth of GAA in Asia where there are now 26 active clubs and hundreds of players. Joe Trolan from Draperstown is the Games Development Officer for the Asian County Board (ACB). He played senior football and hurling with Ballinascreen and played alongside All-Ireland winners Tony Scullion and Eamonn Burns before he left Ireland in 1993 for the US.

A County Derry-linked horse won The Grand National 100 years ago this week in one of the event’s great underdog tales. On March 28, 1924, eleven-year-old Donegal-bred thoroughbred Master Robert won as a huge longshot horse with an out of favour jockey. The horse spent time in Magherafelt and was briefly owned by Pat Murray, who also owned what is now Bryson’s bar in Magherafelt. Master Robert was bred in Donegal, and spent time in Strabane, Magherafelt and Moy before being sent to England.

A Derry woman will take on a 24 hour ‘swimathon’ to raise money for Foyle Women's Aid, which provides support for victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. On 9 April, Patricia Breslin will swim for 17 hours in total with half hour breaks, though the exact split may ebb and flow. Patricia says she's looking forward to the challenge, which was set to take place late last year but had to be rescheduled due to the delayed reopening of City Baths.
