The Alabama Legislature will consider a bill this session aimed at cutting through legal obstacles facing the state’s burgeoning medical cannabis industry and getting the program off the ground, but not everyone is on board. A Mobile County jury has convicted a Mobile man for the 2021 murder of Jarvis Anderson outside of a Prichard gas station. Local veterans call bill to overhaul state office ‘disturbing’

Former warriors from the Mobile area are organizing to oppose a bill introduced by the legislature and championed by Gov. Kay Ivey in Tuesday night’s “State of the State” speech to make the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs commissioner a cabinet position and reorganize the board that oversees the department. The bill, which was introduced on the first day of the 2025 legislative session, comes after Ivey used “supreme executive power” to fire former ADVA Commissioner Kent Davis in October.

Man killed by brother during fight with mother

A man was killed by his younger brother after he attacked their mother at a home in Prichard on Sunday, according to a statement from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). Jymatric Pickens died as a result of being shot after he showed up at 1022 Dade Street and attacked his mother, an MCSO spokeswoman wrote in a statement. A younger brother came into the room while Pickens and the mother were fighting and shot the older sibling.
Senior Bowl players parade down Dauphin Street

Before Senior Bowl week concludes with the collegiate all-star game today, players spent Friday night participating in a Carnival-style parade down Dauphin Street. Players threw Reese's cups, rubber chickens, confetti, beads and more at awaiting fans during the festivities. The parade was followed by a concert by the Eli Young Band at Cathedral Square.
Graduates of St. Catherine’s school remember it during retirement mass

It’s unusual to see a packed Catholic parish for mass on a random Thursday, but residents and visitors alike filled St. Catherine of Sienna on Springhill Avenue on Jan. 30 to say goodbye to the church’s accompanying school building. Flanked by St. Catherine’s parish pastor, the Rev. Fred Boni and other celebrants with connections to the school, the Rev. Paul Zoghby, a graduate of the school, led the special mass and spoke about the school that closed in 1986 during his homily.
