PORTLAND (WGME) -- A Portland-based animal rescue is warning others to be cautious after nearly falling victim to a sophisticated check scam disguised as a charitable donation. Susan Gayle, founder of Little Paws Big Hearts Pekingese Rescue, has spent years saving dogs in need. The organization relies heavily on donations, with costs ranging from $200 to $2,000 per animal, depending on medical and care needs. "There's no shortage of animals to be rescued," Gayle said.
