TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Five years ago today, one of the worst wildfires broke out in the Catalina Mountains. A flash of lightning sparked the Bighorn Fire on June 5, 2020. It burned for seven weeks and charred 120,000 acres, destroying trees, shrubs, and all other vegetation in its path. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the forest is coming back to life with help from the U.S. Forest Service.

It was an exciting day for this year’s honorees who were recognized for their community impact, business leadership, and exemplification of Scouting values. Ryan George received the Distinguished Citizen Award. He started off as a Tiger Cub and achieved the prestigious Eagle rank in 1993.

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - On this day, 40 years ago, Tucson was in the midst of the worst storm on record. Entire neighborhoods were underwater after the Santa Cruz and Rillito Rivers overflowed their banks due to Tropical Storm Octave. More than a half-foot of rain fell in just a few days, washing away homes, bridges, and lives. More than 850 homes and apartments were destroyed and another 2,000 were damaged.
