By Daniel KatziveEarly morning dog walkers and runners arrived in Riverside Park South last Thursday to find a mature weeping willow tree on the park’s large grass lawn near West 65th Street had fallen overnight. Riverside South regulars may have had a sense of deja vu: a similar tree had fallen nearby just a few months earlier and others have come down in this area in the recent past. Weeping willow trees grow rapidly, but have a short lifespan according to the Parks Department’s website.

A witness shared photos with West Side Rag of the animal apparently limping from West 72nd and Riverside Drive up to West End Avenue around 10 a.m.The NYPD confirmed that a 911 call was received at 10:03 a.m. for an injured animal at the location. By Daniel KatziveA jury in lower Manhattan on Friday convicted an Upper West Side resident of murder. The verdict came three years after the broad daylight shooting death of a 27-year-old man who was sitting in a car at West 102nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Donta King, Jr., who was 24 at the time of the murder, was convicted by a New York State Supreme Court jury of second degree murder and firearms charges in the fatal shooting of Ronald Thomas on May 1, 2022.
