Jun. 6—The state will replace thousands of newly issued license plates after a printing error, the Department of the Secretary of State said. About 3,600 pairs of license plates were printed with the wrong amount of space between numbers and letters, office spokesperson Jana Spaulding said on a Friday evening phone call. She said the erroneous license plates were printed within the same time frame.

In letters to families sent this week, superintendents warned of "nihilistic violent extremist" groups, which they say target children from 9 to 17 through social media and online video games.

May 28—The deepest waters in the Gulf of Maine are expected to cool this spring and summer, which could be good news for certain fish and fishermen, according to a forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For years, the gulf has been among the fastest warming parts of the ocean in the world, fueled by decades of rising temperatures in the Gulf Stream.

May 27—The Maine State Library partially reopened Tuesday after a loss of federal funding last month forced its temporary closure and several layoffs. The library has resumed offering all its regular services — including interlibrary loans, curbside pickup of library materials and digitization work — though patrons are required to make appointments for in-person visits, State Librarian Lori Fisher said in an email.
