It's a blisteringly hot November day in the outback town of Quilpie as residents shuffle into a timber church for its final service. The congregation sits, stands, and sings together as they have for decades. At the end of the hour, Bishop Cam Venables lifts his ceremonial staff and brings it down hard three times on the floor. "I declare this building to no longer be a church building set aside for the worship of almighty God," he says.

When Brett Wilson discovered a small, hard lump in his right breast one weekend, he was not too worried. The 51-year-old sales manager, from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, booked a doctor's appointment just to be safe. The GP recommended an ultrasound. "I put the ultrasound referral in the glove box for two months then finally went and got it done," Mr Wilson said. "The lady said it would need a biopsy … within five days, the biopsy was done.

Craig Eddie's love affair with snails started when he was five years old on a Queensland beach. As he recalls, seashells caught his eye in the sand during an annual family beach holiday. He put a few in his pocket to take home and study more closely — but soon, he needed more shells. "We didn't go to the beach very often, so I had to do other things to satisfy the drive," Mr Eddie said. "I discovered there were native land snails in our garden, as well as the introduced variety.
