SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — This week is Arson Awareness Week and the State Fire Marshal is bringing awareness to the deadly crime. Data from the National Fire Protection Association shows there’s an average of 52,260 intentionally set structure fires in the U.S. each year. These fires caused an estimated 400 civilian deaths, 950 civilian injuries, and $815 million in direct property damage each year.

WASHINGTON D.C. (WCIA) — One U.S. representative from Illinois is co-leading a bipartisan effort to fund preventative care for veterans from falling. Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (D-IL) is working with a group of representatives to prevent veterans from falling in their homes. Some of the functions of the bill include developing more veterans-based research for fall prevention and creating a report on the new fall prevention initiatives, as well as creating an Office of Falls Prevention.

The program sends children books in the mail every month from birth up to 5 years old at no cost to families. The program in Iroquois County was brought on by Success By 6, a shared initiative of United Way of Kankakee & Iroquois Counties and the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley.
