(Ankeny, IA) -- The City of Ankeny receives a $10,000 grant. The city is being awarded a Community Betterment Grant from the Polk County Board of Supervisors. The funds will go to enhancements to the High Trestle Trail Experience Park, including new benches and additional waste disposal. The grant funding is meant to support non-profit recreational, cultural, and educational projects available to the public.

A recent study of fruit flies found that flies missing a specific developmental hormone ended up living up to 30 percent longer. Those with the hormone developed faster, leading to a shorter lifespan. Flies without the hormone showed reduced inflammation and delayed signs of aging.

A jury in Polk County convicted 61 year-old Derrick Earnest of killing his girlfriend, 49 year-old Holly Snowgren. Investigators say Earnest assaulted Snowgren on April 19th of last year and later drove her to the hospital, where she died of her injuries the following morning. Earnest was convicted of first degree murder on Friday and faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines International Airport is expecting an increase in travelers this Memorial Day weekend. “We are expecting approximately 20,000 travelers between Friday and Monday, which is about an 11 percent increase compared to last year,” said Sarah Hoodjer with the Des Moines International Airport. She told WHO Radio News that she recommends arriving at the airport at least 90 minutes before your departure time—and even earlier for passengers who don’t have a Real ID.

The law addresses fraudulent cryptocurrency ATMs that look like traditional cash machines. Instead, the ATMs allow people to purchase crypto currency. Scammers have reportedly used similar looking ATMs to get people to send money directly to perpetrators.

Despite record rain totals in parts of Iowa, much of the state is still experiencing drought. "We were certainly starting to feel dry after the first part of May. We are still just slightly below average by about an inch or so. A lot of that has to do with our deficit from winter as we are coming out of that," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff.
