BELCHERTOWN — The only intensive residential program designed to help children from 6 to 12 with acute mental illness has been cut from Gov. Maura Healey’s proposed 2026 budget. No replacement options have been offered. At the same time, similar treatment units for older adolescents are being cut, reducing access to treatment for older youth. Department of Mental Health Commissioner Brooke Doyle informed the affected programs of the cuts in meetings late last month, principals of the programs said.
Man struck and killed on train tracks in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police are investigating the death of a man on railroad tracks near Fieldston Street Saturday morning. Ryan Walsh, spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department, said in a release that officers responded to a report of a man struck by a train on tracks behind the 100 block of Fieldston Street at about 10 a.m. where they found the adult male. He apparently died of his injuries at the scene. The Detective Bureau is continuing to investigate the incident.
