YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown students shared stories again this year in an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence. It looks into the root causes and impact of youth violence. Students write, we listen. Ten Youngstown middle school students had their stories picked out of 250 submissions for the Do The Write Thing Program. They were powerful stories about situations they’ve encountered. Jaliyah Hughes Cundiff, an eighth-grader, wrote about self-harm and things that led up to it.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Opioid-related drug overdoses cause 130 deaths per day in America. Access to an opioid reversal drug has developed as an effective tool to address the opioid crisis. Mahoning County Public Health partnered with BrightView Health Monday to hand out free naloxone kits. It also came with a quick training on how to recognize an overdose and administer the drug. In nearly 40% of overdose deaths, a bystander was present and could have saved a life if they had naloxone available.

NESHANNOCK TWP., Pa. (WKBN) – There’s concern for a roof worker who was hurt on the job Friday morning in Neshannock Township. He stepped on a soft spot over the New Englander Banquet Center and crashed through the building material. “We’re all sick and, obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” said Geoff Measel, who works with the commercial group that owns the multi-tenant building. The roof worker is a 23-year-old man from Mercer.
