The Ontario Ministry of Community, Children and Social Services is investing $876,983 over three years to help women and children fleeing domestic violence in the Halton community find new homes. Minister Charmaine Williams joined Burlington MPP Natalie Pierre and Oakville—North Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos in making the announcement at Halton Women’s Place’s Burlington facility on April 24.

Oakville is poised to lose two of its five Beer Stores on July 6. In a press release issued May 6, the Beer Store announced it would be closing 11 stores in Ontario, including two locations in Oakville. The impacted Oakville Beer Stores are at 104 Lakeshore Rd. W. and 1011 Upper Middle Rd. There are three other Beer Stores in Oakville located at 1500 Upper Middle Rd. W., 290 Hays Blvd.

Halton police are getting an upgrade to their body armour. The Halton Police Board voted during its April 24 meeting to move ahead with the acquisition of TYR soft body armour and TYR hard armour. In a presentation to the board Staff Sgt. Matt Kohler of the police service’s training bureau said that currently most Halton police officers use what is called soft body armour, which is strong enough to stop bullets from a handgun.

A meeting on a bylaw that would require some protests to keep 50 metres away from places of worship was abruptly adjourned after conflict erupted between Oakville’s mayor and a delegate Thursday, May 1. Mayor Rob Burton had warned delegates throughout the meeting to stick to the topic of the protest bylaw and how they felt about it. He shut down speeches that strayed into political areas, like the war in Gaza.
