The last few weeks in Elgin have provided us with some glorious weather. Judging by how busy the new beer cave was at the New Elgin petrol station last weekend, looks like I wasn’t the only person to be trying to make the most of it. It’s been really lovely the last two weeks to have the back door open through the day letting the early summer air breeze through. My only complaint is being slightly envious of the smells coming from my neighbours’ barbecues.

Angling has been suspended in some parts of the River Spey amidst reports fish are dying in dangerously low water levels during the current dry weather. A prolonged period without significant rain has led to depths across the region plummeting with no change expected for at least several days. The nearby River Findhorn has already taken the historic decision to recommend the closure of its beats – the only time outside Covid it has asked anglers to stay away.

Parking fines in Elgin car parks have soared by 37% and banked more than £20,000 extra cash than the previous year, the Press and Journal can reveal. Through the whole of 2024 Moray Council officials slapped 1,787 tickets on windscreens across the town. The staggering rise of 483 additional fines compared to 2023 comes despite usage of Elgin car parks dropping after increased charges were introduced.
