    The Vengaboys, Lasgo and Torridon got the party started in front of thousands for the first day of this year’s MacMoray. The crowd arrived early at Cooper Park and stayed late into the night to kickstart the Elgin music festival. People of all ages danced to a line-up that also included the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Ultrabeat and Black Lace. Our photographer Jason Hedges was there from the afternoon into the evening to capture the very best pictures from the first day of MacMoray.

    Thousands of MacMoray fans were devastated last year when it was announced this weekend could be the final one. Over the last four years the Elgin music festival has developed a reputation that has attracted people from far and wide. The event has even grown its own fan club of MacMorians, who are those that have attended all five events.

    My column last week about selfish drivers taking up entire pavements on Elgin High Street certainly attracted a divisive response and it’s an issue prominent in most town centres. Many of you agreed with me that space for pedestrians is vital to encourage footfall. I heard some of you say that the number of cars and vans left on pavements causes obstacles for those with buggies and wheelchairs. However, others definitely disagreed with me.

    A police investigation has been launched after windows at the Elgin mosque were vandalised. It is the latest time the place of worship has been attacked after offensive graffiti was painted across the building in 2019. Members of the mosque community have told the Press and Journal a window was smashed in the incident this week. Police say they are following a positive line of inquiry after the damage was reported.

    Seven years ago Elgin Golf Club was on the brink after an employee plundered the much-loved institution’s bank accounts of tens of thousands of pounds to fund their own lifestyle. Their overdraft was at the limit, the business-side of the club needed to modernise and members were hurting badly after the theft. Years later, Elgin Golf Club is still continuing that recovery process with a focus on improving the quality and popularity of their offering to keep the cost of vital memberships down.
