More than just a festival for music, the Jersey City Jazz Festival is coming back this year for two days of free live music celebrating one of the oldest forms of culture and expression in the country. The 12th annual event will take place on May 30 and 31 with an eclectic lineup. But visitors to the festival didn’t have to wait long to partake in the celebration: the days leading up to the event have been filled with performances, continuing through Friday evening.

Following a massive fire that broke out at an EMR recycling plant in Camden earlier this year on Feb. 21, residents and organizers in Camden, South Jersey, and Philly Neighbors met virtually to strategize a peaceful way to respond to EMR’s accountability for the incident. The fire at the EMR facility, located at the 1400 block of South Front Street, Camden, could be seen from over 15 miles away. EMR, a UK-based company, has had a recent history of toxic fires in communities.

A 22-year journey began one April day in 2002 when Ntare Mbaho Mwine’s car broke down while visiting his family in Mibirizi, Uganda. When he decided to take a walk to pass the time while waiting for repairs, Mwine happened upon a small photo studio. By chance, he met photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, who was revealed to have had an extensive career dating back to the 1950s until his passing in 2006.
