    The Jersey City Black Comic Con returned for its second year on June 21, drawing heroes, villains and creators across the tri-state area. Local comic book creators, artists and vendors filled the rooms  of the Mary McLeod Bethune Center, promoting their work and selling everything from Funko Pops, artwork and minifigures. Some booths even offered drawing lessons to kids who were interested in taking their first steps in the craft.

    Hoboken residents and friends gathered to celebrate Juneteenth during the third annual Hoboken Juneteenth Unity Picnic on Thursday, June 19. Normally an outdoor event that was to take place at Pier A Park on Sinatra Drive, the event  was moved indoors at Hoboken High School on Clinton St. due to on and off again rain. The Hoboken Juneteenth Unity Picnic first began in 2023 by lifelong Hoboken resident Shakera Frazier-Rosa.

    Rain and wind couldn’t put a stop to the third annual All About Us Juneteenth Festival at Liberty State Park’s Green Ring, which took place on June 19 from noon to 8 p.m.While skies went back and forth from sunny to cloudy, Jersey City residents and more were lining up to celebrate the national holiday, which was announced as such by President Biden in 2021. The annual holiday honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, which took place in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. Also known as Black Independence Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of ongoing racial struggles worldwide. Though celebrated regularly since the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

The comedian is returning as one of the headliners of this year’s Jersey City Comedy Festival, taking place for five nights from June 10 to June 14. As a headliner, coming home to perform in the Jersey City Comedy Festival isn’t something that Wilson could easily put into words. “I’ve been blessed to do some amazing things in my life,” he says.
