With less than an hour to go before polls closed in Montana a steady stream of Cascade County voters strode in and out of Exhibition Hall in Great Falls, casting ballots, filling them out, and registering to vote. At 41%, turnout for a primary election during a Presidential election year was lower than average, perhaps because the candidates for President, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, were decided long before Montanans had an opportunity to cast their votes.

Following a week and a half of unseasonably cool, wet weather at the beginning of May most central Montanans were grateful for the few days of sunshine and warm temperatures that moved into the state. However, even as daytime highs crept up into the mid- to upper-70s a hazy pall dimmed the skies over much of northern and eastern Montana.

Up until a week ago the concern in the Little Belt and Highwood Mountains was a lack of snow. Then with the advent of a single spring snowstorm the narrative changed, potentially pushing back the recreation season at camp sites and more in the area. More than three feet of heavy, wet snow fell in the Little Belt Mountains last Tuesday and Wednesday. The weight of the snow knocked down trees, power lines, and clogged the river systems leading out of the Snowies and Highwoods.

Beginning this week crews from Atlantic Richfield, under the direction of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will begin yard cleanups in the community of Black Eagle to address lead and arsenic contaminated soils resulting from 80 years of smelting activities at the Anaconda Copper Mining Company (ACM) Smelter and Refinery Superfund site. Crews will work 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays.
