    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mecklenburg County Commissioners are prepared to vote on its $2.5 billion budget Tuesday night. The budget includes a .96 property tax increase and cuts to community service grants. The tax increase and cuts are to help cover a $29 million budget gap. If approved the owner of an average home will start to pay about $3 extra in taxes per month starting July 1. Last year the county spent $2,013,060.00 on community service grants.

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mecklenburg County Commissioners are one step closer to approving its $2.5 billion budget with a property tax increase. Thursday commissioners held a straw vote. They voted 9-0 to make changes to the budget that include cuts and relief for some nonprofits. The county is facing a $29 million budget shortfall and the county manager recommended slashing funding to several non-profits and local community service grants. May 18, 2023, was the day Demonte Sherrill and Reuben Holmes were working in an unfinished apartment building when a fire started. The two victims were trapped on the sixth floor. The family of Demonte Sherrill held a family cookout on the 18th to honor and celebrate the life of Sherrill. “I don’t want them to forget him,” Demonte Sherrill’s mother Onita Sherrill said.
