CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Excelsior Club has been closed for nearly 10 years and neighbors have been wanting something positive to happen to the building. WBTV has learned the building is now under contract. Local investor and entrepreneur Shawn Kennedy signed up for this assignment. He says he is in the early stages of reviving The Excelsior Club. “It’s going to be a heavy lift without the community,” Kennedy said. “This doesn’t happen without the city of Charlotte - it doesn’t happen.

PINEVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - Linay and Michael Sheltra are preparing for the Richard Sheltra Memorial 10K, 5K, and Fun Run. It takes place on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The race is in honor of their son who died in the line of duty back in 2016 while battling a fire at a multi-alarm fire at a Pineville business. Proceeds of the race go to support fire departments in need. “The race is so important,” Richard Sheltra’s mother Linay Sheltra said. “Because it’s our only way to fund the foundation.

(WBTV) - The NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson was in town Tuesday morning to engage the community about the civil rights organization’s 116th convention that will be held in Charlotte. Johnson showed up at the Sarah Stevenson Forum on Tuesday, April 29, to spread the word about the convention. The last time Charlotte hosted the NAACP Convention was back in 1996.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Starting July 1, there will be a new Mecklenburg County Manager. His name is Mike Bryant. He comes to the position as Deputy County Manager and has worked for Mecklenburg County for 22 years. His boss - Dena Diorio - is retiring as County Manager. She served in that position for the past 11 years. Mecklenburg County Commissioners unanimously voted for Bryant, and they believe he will take the county to the next level.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - St. Paul Baptist Church in Charlotte is participating in the Target boycott. Black churches have banned together in response to the giant retail store rolling back its commitment to DEI. More than 150,000 people across the country signed up to participate. Rev. Dr. Robert Scott is the Pastor at St. Paul Baptist Church. He says he gathered with several pastors to figure out how they should respond. It was told the churches needed to step up.
