Two Democratic senators and a representative reintroduced a bill May 12 that would create minimum nurse-to-patient staffing ratios at hospitals across the country. Sens. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Rep. Jan Shakowsky, D-Ill., reintroduced the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act on International Nurses Day. The bill would require hospitals to develop annual staffing plans that meet the minimum staffing ratios set forth in the legislation.

Annie Penn Hospital, part of Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health, is postponing surgeries amid a water outage affecting the city of Reidsville, N.C., where the hospital is located. The hospital began experiencing a water outage in the early morning hours of May 13, according to a statement. The facility said it is using emergency water supplies and has cancelled surgeries. While the emergency department remains open, patients with appointments are being sent to other Cone Health facilities.

A California court judge has rejected Providence St. Joseph Hospital’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit alleging it unlawfully denied an emergency abortion to a woman with a life-threatening condition. On May 5, Judge Timothy Canning of the Humboldt County Superior Court ruled that a lawsuit brought forth by Attorney General Rob Bonta can proceed, according to the Times-Standard.
