Saying it’s stuck between Trump Administration demands and Connecticut civil rights law, Cromwell’s school board on Tuesday night unanimously rejected a federal directive to dismantle its protections for transgender student athletes — at least for now. Mayor James Demetriades applauded the board’s decision, and said his town’s schools and some of their students are being unfairly singled out.

As the Trump Administration’s education department begins investigating its policy on transgender student athletes, Cromwell’s school board will talk with its attorney Tuesday night about how to proceed on an issue that could embroil more Connecticut school systems as the year goes on. The probe puts a spotlight on a particularly contentious culture war issue, and is likely to force Cromwell to decide whether to defend its policy of allowing transgender girls to play on female sports teams.

Concerned that 18 gas stations is a lot for a community of about 51,000 people, a Connecticut town is telling developers to take a year-and-a-half timeout from proposing any new ones. A new East Hartford moratorium is intended to give town planners and the planning and zoning commission time to assess how many traditional gas stations should exist in East Hartford — and where any new ones should be built.
