Companies submit proposals on assisting Gage County with a potential corrections facility

BEATRICE – Four companies have submitted proposals to Gage County officials for design, siting and construction administration services on a potential new multi-custody county jail. Law Enforcement Committee Chair Gary Lytle recommended that all four proposals be referred to the committee for review….and the board of supervisors took that step, Wednesday.
Rockford Road resurfacing east of Beatrice, nearly complete

BEATRICE – A road that leads to a state recreation area southeast of Beatrice is about to be a lot smoother. Resurfacing work has been done along South 94th Road….known as the Rockford State Recreation Area Road…..south of U.S. Highway 136. Gage County Highway Superintendent Mark Kuhnke says the project should be completed in the next few days. "They're on track to finishing up on Friday. There may be a little bit of striping and painting on the roads that may bleed into next week.
Entrance and exit repaving, at Hannibal Park

BEATRICE – The entrance to a highly utilized public park in southeast Nebraska is getting an upgrade. The entrance road to Hannibal park in east Beatrice is being milled and resurfaced. City officials say that means the park entrance will be closed for about three days this week. Constructors Inc. is resurfacing the entrance and exit lanes to the park, which in recent years has benefited from significant private support in the way of sponsorships and naming rights.
Costs going up, for BPS Pay to Ride bus program

BEATRICE – Parents who use the pay-to-ride bus service for their children in Beatrice Public Schools will be paying more. Superintendent Jason Alexander says that’s because the cost of the program is rising significantly, for Beatrice Public Schools. The board of education approved increases in the annual rate to use the program, and approved a new five-year contract with First Student, the company providing bus service to the district.
Beatrice Public Schools finds permanent home for the 18-21 Choice Program

BEATRICE – After years of renting space to provide services to special education students between ages 18 and 21, Beatrice Public Schools has now acquired a home, for the program. The Beatrice School Board approved the purchase of a residence and property next to Beatrice High School at 2707 East Scott, for $240,000. Special Education Coordinator for BPS, Beth Cordry-Hooksta says it will become the new home of the districts’ Choice 18-21 program.
Demolition work continues at former school site

BEATRICE - Work is continuing to haul away what’s left of the former Lincoln Elementary School in east Beatrice. A demolition crew was working over the weekend at the former school, which has been reduced to rubble. The site eventually will become a new housing development, called Heritage Heights. Once the site is cleared, the demolition company hired by the city will move on to the former Paddock Lane Elementary School site, where buildings are also scheduled to be demolished.
Gage County to appeal adverse ruling in broadband permit case

BEATRICE – Gage County will appeal a district court ruling against it, in a case involving denial of a permit to a communications company for a broadband upgrade. The Board of Supervisors voted 6-1 to appeal District Judge Julie Smith’s ruling that the county acted arbitrarily without evidence, overstepping its authority into an area administered by the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
Nebraska lawmakers hand public schools a library mandate

BEATRICE – Public schools in Nebraska have another state mandate to deal with. The Nebraska Legislature Thursday gave final approval to a bill that will require school boards to adopt policy on access by a parent or guardian to certain library information. Senator Dave Murman’s LB 390 would require parents or guardians to have access to specific school library information, through an online catalog of books and a notification system to inform parents when their student checks out a book.

BEATRICE - Beatrice Police are in the initial stages of establishing a Community Watch program similar to neighborhood watch programs used across the U.S.The coordinator of the effort, Officer Courtney Brauch, Interim Police Chief Jay Murphy and Captain Dan Moss met with a dozen residents Tuesday night, at the Beatrice School Administration building.
