Wymore Motorist escapes crashed vehicle through sunroof

BEATRICE – Gage County law officers investigated a one-vehicle accident that occurred last Friday, where they were notified of a vehicle in a ditch along South 36th Road, just south of Wymore. A deputy sent to investigate at around 9:30 a.m. observed a white, 2013 Subaru Forester on its side, unoccupied, with the vehicle’s side airbag deployed. After investigating, the deputy spoke with the registered owner of the vehicle.

BEATRICE – Businesses and organizations that promote tourism were presented awards in Gage County, Tuesday. A small-town bakery that opened in 2022 and has transitioned into a regional tourism attraction was one of the honorees. Lindsey Oelling, who operates Paper Moon Pastries in Cortland, was named the Friend of Tourism honoree by the Gage County Visitors Committee. BEATRICE – Second-grade students who helped clean up their community got their picture taken with Beatrice Mayor Bob Morgan, at Monday night’s city council meeting. They were the annual Mayor-For-a-Day winners in the Great American Cleanup Recycling Project. In mid-April, the students collected items to be recycled, helping keep areas of Beatrice clean.

BEATRICE – Beatrice City officials have approved bids submitted by a company for infrastructure improvements at former elementary school sites, in conjunction with future residential development. The bids from Van Kirk Brothers Contracting total just over $1.32 million for the former Paddock Lane Elementary site to be named Corral Crossing….and approximately $979,000 for the former Lincoln School site…which will be known as Heritage Heights.
Motorcycle-pickup collision kills northeast Kansas couple

BEATRICE – A Sabetha, Kansas couple were killed Friday in a collision between their motorcycle and a pickup, in northeast Kansas. The Kansas Highway patrol identifies the victims as the motorcycle operator, 63-year-old David Koch…and the rider, 62-year-old Odetta Koch, both of Sabetha. Authorities say their 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle crossed the centerline of U.S. Highway 36, colliding with a pickup…about four miles west of Hiawatha.
Nebraska lawmakers facing bigger budget hole to fill

BEATRICE – It’s the one thing Nebraska lawmakers are required to tackle this session….approval of a new two-year budget. That debate takes center stage this coming week. The new state budget plan will be debated beginning Tuesday. Appropriations Committee member. Senator Myron Dorn, of Adams….says the debate will come on the heels of a recent Nebraska Forecasting Advisory Board report that lowered revenue projections by $190 million in the next biennium.
Tecumseh Prison staff injured by inmate assault

TECUMSEH =Three staff members at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution suffered sustained serious injuries in an inmate assault. The assault happened Thursday, when an inmate attacked staff members with a homemade weapon. One staff member sustained a broken nose and two received staples for head injuries. All three staff members were treated at the hospital and released. An investigation of the incident has been launched.
NGage Director named to Nebraska Tourism Commission

BEATRICE – The director of a southeast Nebraska development organization has been named by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, to the Nebraska Tourism Commission. Gage Area Growth Enterprise Executive Director Rachel Kreikemeier’s appointment to the state commission was recently confirmed by the Nebraska Legislature. Kreikemeier will serve as a commission representative in District Three, which represents Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Saline, Pawnee and Richardson Counties.
New road to Rockford Lake finished, east of Beatrice

Gage County Planning Commission reappointments approved

BEATRICE – Two members of the seven-member Gage County Planning and Zoning Commission have been reappointed to new terms. But the votes conducted show a split in support for one of the appointees. The supervisors met in closed session prior to the vote, Wednesday. After that, the board reappointed James Lenners, of rural Adams to another three-year-term on the commission, by a 7-0 vote. He serves as the commission’s current chairman.
