When my wife, Momo, and I travel the world, I like to recap my time in that city as a commuter. Comparing and contrasting how others get around versus how we navigate the molasses maze of Metro Atlanta is often a fun exercise. And stretching this idea to be able to cover hill climb racing in Germany is just as rewarding. My experience as an Atlanta commuter, however, has largely been from a reporter’s view during and above rush hours.

A retro movement spearheaded by Gen-Z has made ’90s clothing, dad rock, and cassettes en vogue, so to speak. Dashboards in automobiles are now also feeling the throwback pressure. After a decade of moves to make cars more futuristic and sleek with touchscreens, consumers and safety advocates are beginning to balk at the amount of car functions that are moving from tactile buttons to dashboard infotainment systems.

Last week’s column on automated school zone speeding cameras struck a chord — and not a minor one. Several people wrote in with their stories about being dinged for speeding in areas they did not know were school zones and then their struggles to protest fines. One wrote of exorbitant add-on fees to the initial fine brought on by the private company. Another wrote that they were unaware of the ticket, because the company sent it to the wrong address.

Recent citizen angst with automated, speed-detecting cameras in school zones has seemingly come to a head. While a resounding majority of Georgia lawmakers voted in 2018 to allow the cameras, opposition is mounting in this session. State Rep, Dale Washburn, R-Macon, has made prohibition of these cameras his top priority in this session. “Local governments are using these school-zone cameras to rake in revenue and to entrap people,” Washburn told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
