New York City officials made headlines at the beginning of this year by implementing a hotly debated and long-awaited pricing plan to decrease traffic in Manhattan. Congestion pricing, a tactic used by urban planners for several decades in different corners of the world, has had a two-pronged approach. Its dynamic pricing for certain vehicles and at certain peak hours is meant to decrease volume on busy routes and increase ridership on buses and trains.

Vacation is such a palate-cleanser in so many ways. Out of the grind, we heal and recharge. We can gain perspective, if even for a few days. But we hopefully retain that learning and apply it appropriately in our everyday lives. I certainly try to do this from a traffic and commuting perspective every time my wife Momo and I travel. And we certainly gained some rich insights in the hours we spent on foot and in cars on the beautiful island of São Miguel in the Azores.

While the calendar start of summer is nearly two months away, the summer season is around the corner. Summer vacations and time off from school may take small bites out of morning commutes, but traffic jams and incidents will not decrease overall. Summer escapes from town, concerts, construction, afternoon pop-up storms and idle-handed teens are among the factors for which all commuters will have to account.

Picture this scene: You are walking down a narrow sidewalk, at a decent pace but in no hurry. You begin to hear footsteps get closer and, as they near you, you swivel your head to peek at who is approaching. The person is now inches away and just continues walking in that spot, almost hovering. How strange would that be? How nervous would that make you? And wouldn’t you be more likely to trip up and less likely to enjoy your nice stroll?
