KANEOHE, Hawaii (Island News) -- Keiki rodeo action wrapped up today at Kualoa Ranch in Windward Oahu. Dozens of middle schoolers from across the state competed in the state finals this weekend. Events included pole bending, bull riding, roping and barrel racing. The Hawaii High School Rodeo Association will honor its top student-athletes on Sunday, May 11 at its awards ceremony. “I never worked with such wonderful kids,” Hawaii High School Rodeo Association President Kathy Rita.

KANEOHE, Hawaii (Island News) -- This weekend -- some of Hawaii's best cowboys and cowgirls are headed to Kualoa Ranch in Windward Oahu -- to show off their skills. The 2025 Hawaii High School Rodeo Association State Junior Finals Rodeo -- kicks off Friday. The Junior High Division will show off their skills in bareback steer riding -- bull riding -- roping and barrel racing. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the rodeo starts at 12 p.m. on Friday.

A new report says the “happenings in Washington D.C.” are keeping both sellers and buyers on the fence. “We are seeing investors holding off on acquisitions and seller’s holding off on going to the market,” according to the report by hotel investment company Powell & Aucello.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- The building in Honolulu that a Kamaka Air cargo plane crashed near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport that resulted in the deaths of the plane’s two pilots is being demolished. Island News has learned that the state Department of Transportation has recently filed documents to hire a contractor to demolish the vacant building on Ualena Street that used to by occupied by Sky Chef. The estimated cost of the demolition is between $2 million and $3 million.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s parents and a Hawaii restaurant veteran are teaming up to open three Bad Ass Coffee shops on Oahu. The first location is opening later this spring along Waialae Avenue across from the Kaimuki Community Park. The partnership, which includes Galu and Diane Tagovailoa and Ted Davenport – who has ties to Subway, Ruby Tuesday and TCBY, recently filed a building permit for its Kaimuki café.

A $62 million building permit recently filed with Honolulu’s building department confirms the possible redevelopment of the Davies Pacific Center into a hotel. A new report released by commercial real estate firm Colliers Hawaii says the owner of the Bishop Street office tower is exploring the possibility of redeveloping the office tower into a limited-service hotel.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- The University of Hawaii Athletics Director could become one of the highest-paid state employees in the Islands. UH Board of Regent and former Governor Neil Abercormbie said at its meeting Thursday that if the university wants to attract a viable candidate it must offer a base salary of at least $500,000. This would not include incentives which could add more than $100,000 more to the new ADs compensation package.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- Oahu Mexican Grill is opening its third restaurant on Oahu in the Honolulu neighborhood of Kakaako. A Ward Village spokesperson has confirmed to Island News that the popular Mexican restaurant is expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year in a ground floor space of its Aalii condominium. Oahu Mexican Grill, known by many as “OMG,” filed public documents this week to build out its new space. The estimated value of work is about $750,000.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- A new 7-Eleven store is likely opening in the former Longs Drugs store building in the Honolulu neighborhood of Liliha. Island News has learned that the convenience store giant has filed public documents this week to open a new store at the 3,156-square-foot building that occupies about 14,200-square-feet of land. Seven-Eleven Hawaii purchased the property at 1748 Liliha Street last September for $4 million, according to tax records.
