COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The National Weather Service confirms an EF1 tornado hit parts of Talbot County late Saturday night. This Tornado with winds between 86 and 110 miles per hour left behind lots of damage, and leaving several families with children displaced. The Director of the housing authority tells me the American red cross and local firefighters were out there as soon as the tornado passed. Each household was given money to get a hotel room until a Permanent solution was found.

The city is providing the non-profit organization with $3.2 million in funding to take over services from the animal shelter. Courtney Pierce, executive director of Paws Humane Society, says the next steps involve hiring and training 31 new employees. They have a 90-day transitional period before officially taking over, ensuring everything is done correctly.

It was all a part of the 6th annual Jubilee International Peace Symposium. The city of Americus is on a journey to curb gun violence among youth.
