Imagine a communal farm founded in 1942, where sustainability is put over profit and a Christian community that welcomes all people of any, or no faith, to join their community. I recently visited Koinonia Farm in Americus, Georgia, and discovered a way of life I thought died in the 19th century. As Sue Morrison, the farm’s hospitality coordinator, showed us around the farm, we heard a bell ring.

Montgomery was the spark that lit the fuse on the long-simmering fight by African Americans for their civil rights. It began a movement that is still ongoing today. Several museums there trace the story. No matter your race, if you believe that the American Flag stands for “liberty and justice for all,” you should visit these museums. Rosa Parks Museum commemorates the events beginning the Civil Rights movement.

In the town of Plains, Georgia, President Jimmy Carter was affectionally referred to as “Mr. Jimmy.” Everybody in the tiny town was related to or knew him personally. Never before has a president devoted so much of himself to his hometown both before and after his presidency. Carter set many records. Before his death on December 29, 2024, he was the oldest living president, having reached the milestone of 100 years old. He also enjoyed the longest post-White House career of any president.

Historic Brattonsville in South Carolina’s Olde English District is a little-known historic village with a big story. Its history began in the 1760s when three Bratton brothers settled here. The Brattons became wealthy slave owners. The village features over 30 structures, an 800 acre plantation, and a Revolutionary War battlefield site.
