Running never came naturally to Father John Gribben. “I nearly collapsed after that first run,” he said, recalling the first time he tried to run half a mile. “I said, ‘I’m not a runner’, but I never stopped after it.” That first attempt was in the 1950s. More than half a century later, aged 81, Gribben has won a gold medal.

Since Tobi Sheldon was born with symbrachydactyly, a rare congenital hand condition, he has never known anything different to leading his life with one functional arm. However, a constant in Tobi’s life since the age of six months has been visiting the Portsmouth Enablement Centre, which specialises in creating prosthetics.

A personal trainer who caused a “catastrophic collision” when he failed to stop for police while on a first date has been sentenced to 14 months’ detention. Mazyar Azarbonyad, 20, admitted dangerous driving after the crash, which wrecked five police cars and left seven officers needing hospital treatment. The court heard that Azarbonyad had refused to pull over when police officers noticed his BMW X5 series had a faulty rear light while he was driving on the A1 west of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The owner of British Gas suffered a shareholder revolt at its annual meeting as almost 40 per cent of Centrica’s investors who voted opposed the group’s executive pay. At the meeting in Manchester, 39.98 per cent of votes went against approving Centrica’s annual remuneration report, which sets the pay for top directors. The remuneration of directors at Centrica has been in the spotlight in recent years because of the earnings of Chris O’Shea, its chief executive.
