TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Summer break is usually a time for fun, but for dozens of children at We Care Tucson, it's also a chance to dive into science, technology and engineering — for free. We Care Tucson’s Tech Robotics Camp, now in its third year, is designed to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts to youth from underserved communities. The non-profit organization removes barriers to participation by offering the camp at no cost.

(KGUN9) — Tucson Mayor Regina Romero is in Tampa, Florida, this week attending the 93rd Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors, where she’s collaborating with peers from across the nation on shared urban challenges, such as immigration enforcement and the fentanyl crisis. Romero, who serves as chair of the Latino Alliance of Mayors, emphasized the importance of these gatherings for exchanging solutions. “Tucson is not unique in the issues that we’re going through,” she said.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Tucson Electric Power (TEP) filed a petition with the Arizona Corporation Commission to raise electricity rates by approximately 14%, citing rising operational costs and inflation. If approved, the increase would mean an average of $16 more per month for typical residential customers — or nearly $200 more per year. The proposed hike comes on the heels of a 9.55% rate increase approved in 2023, despite TEP requesting a 14% hike at that time.

(KGUN) — Tucson is set to break ground on its first Bus Rapid Transit line, a project City leaders hope will revolutionize local mass transit by increasing efficiency and accessibility between key areas of the city. The route will run from the Tohono Tadai Transit Center near the Tucson Mall, down Stone Avenue, and terminate downtown at the Ronstadt Transit Center. The route was chosen after public input.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN9) — A Phoenix man is awaiting sentencing for the murder of his wife, Elizabeth Byrd, whose family ties to Tucson have brought renewed attention to the case. Now, the family is speaking out about Elizabeth's legacy and her husband's eventual sentencing. John Byrd, a former detective with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after admitting to strangling his wife during a domestic dispute in July 2024.
