Whataburger has been approved to build a new restaurant in Escambia County, raising the chain’s local store count to 10 locations. The new Whataburger will be constructed off of North Blue Angel Parkway and West U.S. Highway 98 in the same plaza as Escambia’s newest Publix. The restaurant’s official address will be 9510 W. U.S. 98. Escambia County’s Development Review Committee (DRC) issued a development order for the Texas-based chain’s latest restaurant on April 30.

Big Lots’ revitalization plan is bringing the company back into the retail scene under new ownership and reopening dozens of formerly closed locations in the U.S.Big Lots will reopen 132 stores in 14 different states during two phases of store openings in May. The first wave of stores will reopen on May 1 and the next wave will start two weeks later on May 15. Five Florida Big Lots stores are included in the upcoming waves of store openings, none of which are in the Pensacola area.

A weekly farmer’s market held in Navarre is getting an upgrade soon, including spaces for food trucks. Navarre Farmers' Market, also known as Combs of Honey, was approved to construct a new driveway that’ll lead motorists into its 1.5-acre lot on the northwest corner of Segura Street and State Highway 87 South. The project will add new parking spaces and a large-vehicle vendor spot to the farmers market. This farmers market is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday.

The growth of Milton and Pace in recent years has created an uptick in commercial development plans across U.S. Highway 90 as well as increasing interest from big-name brands looking to branch out to Santa Rosa County. Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Que is one of the latest franchises to join the area after opening their new restaurant this year, which is also next door to a new Chipotle, while brands like Wawa are still trying to get their development plans for the area off the ground.
