The vote came one day after the funeral for the late Senate president Dominick J. Ruggerio, who died on April 21 at age 76 after battling cancer. His death touched off a three-way leadership battle between Lawson, Ciccone and Ryan W. Pearson, a former Democratic majority leader who fell out of favor with Ruggerio. In the Senate Democratic caucus, Lawson received 23 votes while Pearson received eight votes.

PROVIDENCE — All three contenders for the Rhode Island Senate’s top leadership positions face potential conflicts of interest in their outside employment, but the potential is greatest for Senator Valarie J. Lawson as president of one the state’s largest teachers unions, a watchdog group says. Following Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio’s death last Monday, Lawson was vying for the Senate’s No. 1 post along with Senators Frank A. Ciccone III and Ryan W. Pearson.

But attention has begun to turn to who will fill the Senate District 4 seat that Ruggerio, a North Providence Democrat, had held since 2005. A special election is expected in later summer or early fall to fill the seat, which represents parts of North Providence and Providence. Among those being mentioned as potential candidates are North Providence Town Council President Dino Autiello, North Providence Town Council President Pro Tempore Stefano V.
