PROVIDENCE — When Aliaksei Shostak first competed on trampoline in the USA Gymnastics finals in Providence in 2016, he experienced his first “Olympic heartbreak,” falling short of qualifying for Brazil that summer. But the experience “lit a fire” in him, and he went on to make it to the the 2020 and 2024 Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. This week, Shostak’s back in Providence, competing on trampoline again in the USA Gymnastics championships, which have returned for the first time since 2016.

PROVIDENCE — Following a three-hour debate, the Rhode Island House of Representatives approved a sprawling $14 billion budget on Tuesday that increases health care spending, raises taxes and fees including a new tax on people with second homes, and directs more money to public transit and education. The passage of the massive budget bill comes as the General Assembly races to finish its legislative session by the end of the week.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — A town councilman has been charged with assault after allegedly confronting a Republican official at a town council meeting who had posted online about the councilman’s previous drunken driving charges. Jay Wegimont, 33, was charged with one count of simple assault, according to South Kingstown Police Chief Matthew Moynihan. He declined to release the arrest report.

PROVIDENCE — Phones away, please. Rhode Island is poised to ban the use of cellphones during school hours, after legislation passed the Rhode Island House unanimously Monday night. The Senate passed an identical bill last month, also unanimously. The legislation requires school districts to come up with a policy by next summer to ban phones and other personal electronic devices during the school day, but it leaves the specifics — including enforcement — up to local school officials.
