During that same time period, Brown expended $34.4 million in grants from NSF to support nearly 250 projects. These indirect costs help pay for administrative functions, according to the plaintiffs.

PROVIDENCE — Mayor Brett Smiley has proposed a hefty property tax increase to city homeowners and landlords, raising nearly $30 million. Smiley is also seeking to increase a slew of fees and fines — including parking tickets — and totrim department budgets and eliminate about two dozen jobs, most of which are already vacant. The $624 million annual city budget was submitted to the City Council on Wednesday evening.
