Tenderloin residents say that the “urban oasis” model San Francisco city officials now want to develop at the former “triage center” at Sixth and Stevenson streets — an area known as an epicenter of drug activity — has worked before. Just five blocks away at Turk and Hyde streets, the model turned a neighborhood once known for drug sales and consumption into a place safe for children and residents.

About 40 people gathered at San Francisco international airport on Thursday morning in support of two Palestinian men with valid visas who were detained by federal officials and denied entry to the United States yesterday. Mission Local first reported the detention of Eid Hthaleen and Ouda Alhadlin, two humanitarian speakers who were arriving in the Bay Area to speak about their experiences living in the West Bank and thank their supporters in the Jewish and Christian communities.

Two Palestinian men visiting the Bay Area for an interfaith humanitarian mission had their visas revoked upon landing in San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon, according to their sponsor — a local Jewish synagogue leader. Eid Hthaleen and Ouda Alhadlin arrived at SFO around 1 p.m. to share their experiences living in the West Bank and visit various houses of worship, like Christian churches and the Kehilla Community Synagogue in Piedmont, that have supported them and their village, Umm Al-Khair.

The four-month pilot of a triage center on Sixth Street, a law enforcement and treatment hub that offered referrals to people struggling with homelessness and drug addiction, ended on Friday, according to sources from the mayor’s office. In the coming weeks, the site is expected to transition into an “oasis,” like the one run by Urban Alchemy at Turk and Hyde streets: a safe outdoor space, chaperoned by ambassadors, where people can gather, sit down, and relax.
