If someone had told me I would be writing these words two months ago, I would have thought they were telling lies. I came into Steamboat Springs expecting to be here much longer than three years — perhaps decades — but I’ve recently accepted the position of managing editor for The Maui News, and The Steamboat Pilot & Today is currently searching for its next editor. The opportunity to lead The Maui News, the island’s newspaper since 1900, came up as somewhat of a surprise to me.

As political candidates jockey for votes in two Routt County commissioners races, it’s unclear what role diversity could play in the upcoming local elections, though all of the candidates have something to say on the topic. A question posed to the four candidates during a forum hosted by the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs put all of them on the spot. Their answers mostly landed along the same lines, though they revealed some differences in the candidates’ feelings and approach to the question.

What could have been a contentious public hearing regarding a request to build a temporary man camp in Moffat County ended with little fanfare as county officials revealed the applicant has pulled the request. On Sept. 10, county staff told Moffat County Commissioners the applicant has rescinded the request for a temporary-use permit to construct four five-bedroom units and accompanying accessory buildings to house mine workers at 3037 E. Victory Way through 2028.

Described as the first housing project of its kind built in Craig in more than 40 years, the 8th Street Townhomes are ready for purchase. Local officials, project partners and community members celebrated completion of the attainable housing project with a Thursday ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 8th Street Townhomes consist of 20 new two- and three-bedroom units reserved for local workers.
