    IN THE SPRING OF 1998, Carl Belz (1937–2016) mounted his valedictory exhibition at the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University as its director: a selection of thirty-nine works by the American painter Joseph Marioni, then fifty-five years old. I had never heard of Marioni (hereafter Joseph), but I knew Carl—we had been undergraduates together at Princeton during the late 1950s and remained loosely in touch over the years.
