Tributes have been paid to a local hero and former Aberdeenshire teacher following his death at the age of 75. The legacy of Douglas Samways lives on in the pupils he taught and in the Stonehaven community, where he was a friend to many and a “pioneering stalwart”. Mr Samways, born on March 6, 1950, lived in the town with his loving wife, Elaine, and was described by his family as a devoted father and granda. After a short illness, he died peacefully at home on April 10.

The Upperkirkgate sandwich shop is as well-known for its cheery staff and homely feel, as its homemade sandwiches and traybakes. Alongside their team of dedicated staff, Jackie and Sheila have built a strong reputation and loyal customer base since the business first opened in 2007.

Any Aberdeenshire residents displaced by the closure of their sheltered housing will be offered a “personalised assistance package” by the council – including a £2,570 grant and help to pack. The Press and Journal previously reported Aberdeenshire Council is considering shutting up to 17 facilities across the region in an effort to cut costs. If “necessary changes” are not made, the council has said the service will face a loss of £135 million over the next 30 years.

A 35-year-old who died in hospital following a crash near Banchory has been described as a “loving family man”. Nathan Few, from the Kintore area, was riding a motorcycle when he was involved in a collision on the B977 almost three weeks ago. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries. His family has asked for privacy and shared the following statement: “Nathan was a loving family man who loved spending time with his kids.

Seven Aberdeen businesses have been shortlisted for national awards that celebrate the “most loved local restaurants” across the country. Deliveroo has announced the full list of nominations for its annual Restaurant Awards which are voted for by the public.
