The big day finally arrived for two California sea lion pups to return to the ocean after being found malnourished, as Southern California beaches were at the height of a toxic algal bloom. It took the shy pups about 15 minutes to finally leave their crates as a crowd watched them enter the Hermosa Beach waters. The pups, named “Wren” and “Hue,” were brought to the Marine Mammal Center Los Angeles (MMCC) for treatment last month.

Police are investigating a woman seen on video brandishing a machete in two separate incidents of apparent road rage in Los Angeles County this year. The most recent altercation took place on Saturday near Rosales Street and Borden Avenue in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles. Video shows the woman driving what appears to be an older model Toyota 4Runner arguing with another driver over who was following the other. “I actually live around here,” the woman driving the SUV says.

Serj Tankian, lead singer of the rock band System of a Down, has launched a new venture, Kavat Coffee, which opened its first store in Los Angeles in July 2024. The company, which began in 2018 with direct-to-consumer online sales, aims to bridge cultures through coffee. Tankian’s passion for the brew stems from childhood memories of his grandmother and mother making coffee. “The smell would drift through the house, giving a feeling of being home,” Tankian said.
