Denver is one step closer to improving its sidewalks after the City Council approved a $15 million contract to begin implementing a voter-approved program. That step, however, has been a long time coming. And while some immediate repairs will start soon, the contract that was approved Monday mostly will pay for a “sidewalk master plan” to prepare to fix the rest.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston says the city will change the way it approves construction projects by revamping the permitting process to speed up and streamline reviews. Under Johnston’s first-ever executive order, set to be unveiled Monday afternoon, the new Denver Permitting Office will begin reviewing permit applications in mid-May with a promise to process applications in 180 days.

The city would invest up to $70 million toward land acquisition and improvements connected to Denver’s professional women’s soccer stadium, according to a presentation by Mayor Mike Johnston’s administration that was posted online Wednesday. In March, Johnston and the National Women’s Soccer League team ownership group announced the plans for the 14,500-seat stadium at the Santa Fe Yards on about 14 acres in Denver’s Baker neighborhood.

Denver voters will be asked whether they want to keep or overturn the city’s ban on flavored tobacco after the Denver Elections Division found that a ballot petition by opponents had enough signatures. If voters reject the ban, it would roll back a near-unanimous vote of the City Council in December to prohibit sales of nearly all flavored tobacco and nicotine products in the city.
