    Edmonton officials are pleading with people to stop leaving animals unattended in vehicles. On Tuesday, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said that as of July 16, it had already responded to more of these calls than in all of July last year. Crews have been called to 65 instances of pets or people left alone in vehicles so far this month, surpassing last July's full-month total of 63.     The trial for a man accused of fatally stabbing a teenage girl in a Leduc high school began Monday. Dylan Thomas Pountney, now 23, is accused of first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Jennifer Winkler. She was stabbed in front of her classmates and teacher at Christ the King School in March of 2021. RCMP have said Winkler and Pountney knew each other, and both attended the school. The courtroom in Wetaskiwin was packed with family and friends as multiple RCMP officers took the stand.

    A small West Coast company is helping astronauts return to the moon in 2026. ALUULA Composites has signed on to provide its durable, lightweight fabric to build space habitats. The Max Space inflatables can be transported in very small packages and then expanded to create a much larger workspace. "Max Space is doing the design work and they are putting together an expandable habitat to use in space," ALUULA president and CEO Sage Berryman said. "They're doing it under contract with NASA.

    More coaching changes were announced by the Edmonton Elks on Tuesday. Nate O'Neal, who was the team's defensive line coach since the start of the 2024 season, resigned. He's being replaced by former CFL player Almondo Sewell. This marks Sewell's return to the Elks after playing nine seasons with the club from 2011 to 2019, winning the 103rd Grey Cup with the football team in 2015. Sewell, 37, is a six-time CFL all-star and a seven-time West Division all-star while he was with the Elks.
