    The Algonac City Council recently approved items relating to two of the city’s biggest current projects: the Algonac Activity Center and the Algonac Community Swimming Pool. At an April 15 meeting, the council unanimously approved a security system for the Algonac Activity Center with Blue Water Video in the amount of $16,999.69 and directed the city manager to sign the proposal on behalf of the city.

    The Algonac City Council conducted a public hearing April 15 on the creation of a special assessment district for fire services. Resident Sandra Simmons has come before the city council a handful of times since last September, questioning its process of adopting a resolution in 2023 that directed administration to prepare ballot language for the fire special assessment district for fire department services. The proposal was placed on the Feb. 27, 2024, ballot.

    Coast Guard Sector Detroit recently announced the end of Operation Coal Shovel, bringing the icebreaking season to a close on the lower Great Lakes. Operation Coal Shovel began on Jan. 6 and officially concluded on April 14 due to lack of ice coverage and complete waterway availability for commerce, the Coast Guard said in a news release. The operation covers an area spanning from the St. Lawrence Seaway, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Detroit/St. Clair River System and southern Lake Huron.
