Iowa offers a variety of resources for aspiring and current entrepreneurs, including SCORE. SCORE is an organization powered by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and their mission is to encourage those in the small business community through complimentary mentoring and education, according to SCORE volunteer Sheriffa Jones. Jones is one of the many volunteers SCORE has, and she serves the Des Moines area. Jones has a background in nonprofit management.

Gracie Council Bluffs is the first and only business in the area that offers premier jiu-jitsu classes. Owner and instructor Bob Sullivan has been training on Brazilian jiu-jitsu for 14 years and was able to get his instructor certification last year. He is a Gracie Brown Belt and is the highest ranked instructor from Chicago to Denver and Kansas City to Canada. Sullivan said he was called to open his own gym. “I was called to Council Bluffs to really serve this community,” he said.

The rock band 311 is scheduled to take the stage at The Astro Amphitheater in La Vista later this month, but not before being honored by the Omaha Press Club for their impact on the community. The band will be featured in the Omaha Press Club’s “Faces on the Barroom Floor” gallery on Thursday, Sept. 28, the day before the band's performance at The Astro. Their caricatures are drawn by Jeff Koterba, who is a nationally syndicated cartoonist.

Stop by the Papio Pub next week to see just “A Couple of Wanderers,” two traveling solo musicians from the Catskills of New York. Faith Kelly, a “traveling spacey folk rock’n’roll musician,” and Caswyn Moon, who plays “dark melodic Americana music,” will be at the Papio Pub on Wednesday, Sept. 6, as part of their five week summer tour. “Together we travel around the country to share our songs and tales of the Catskills,” Kelly said in an email to the Times.

Styx will perform at Harrah’s Stir Cove on Aug. 26, one of the 100-plus shows the band will do this year on their 2023 World Tour, said Styx guitarist Lawrence Gowan. “Our goal is to play at least 100 shows a year,” he said. “And we have met that goal since I joined in 1999 … so for at least 24 years.”One way they make sure they do enough shows is by playing at state fairs — including Iowa’s. “I love August because we get to play at state fairs,” he said while in Columbus, Ohio at the state fair.
