Marc Perez wraps up his day at work, but in reality, he can’t take it easy. He has to get ready for what has become almost a second job — his fight to live. Three times a week, for four hours each time, he drives about 10 minutes from his home in Bayside, Queens to the hospital. That’s where he receives kidney dialysis. Without this, he would die. “One of the criteria for getting on dialysis is you have to be below 15% kidney function,” Perez said.

A preschool teacher is crediting a group of colleagues and first responders with saving her life after she went into cardiac arrest at her Upper East Side school earlier this year. Olivia McAndrew lost consciousness inside the library at Yorkville Community School, also known as P.S. 151, during a routine Monday afternoon staff meeting. She was later revived after her coworkers performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
