I have a lengthy list of experiences and places in the back of beyond that I write about for my Wild About Utah segments. But right now, all of those ideas are on the backburner. I spent President’s Day weekend in Zion National Park — seeking mid-winter sunshine and satisfying a much-needed red rock fix. There was a time when winter months in Zion felt like an off-season experience. Not anymore. The park is packed year-round.

Miniature pellets of snow swirl past my face, land on the slope we are struggling against, then tumble hundreds of feet down the snow-encased mountain. My friend John Louviere and I have skied the Bear River Range backcountry together since we first met as Utah State University students in 1995. Today the light is flat, causing both sky and mountain to blend into a single dimension, making it difficult to distinguish snow from clouds.

Hardware Wildlife Management Area (WMA) provides refuge for hundreds of elk who congregate each December and hunker down for the duration of the winter. In 2008, Hardware Education Director Marni Lee and I established a service-learning partnership. Since then, I have ventured up northern Utah’s Blacksmith Fork Canyon with about a thousand 5th and 6th graders—a half-dozen students at a time—to spend the day with DWR biologists and managers.

ShareOne September day when I was a fifth grader, my dad pulled me out of school to climb the Pfeifferhorn, an 11,000 foot peak in the Wasatch Range. That was the most meaningful and defining day of my elementary school experience. Years later, when I first arrived in Logan, my younger sister Heather and I climbed Naomi Peak the day before our USU classes started. We made it an annual habit. At just under 10,000 feet elevation, Naomi Peak is the highest point in the Bear River Mountains.
