WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Iowa softball team lost to Penn State 6-2 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. The No. 6 Hawkeyes (35-18, 15-7 Big Ten) fell behind early and never managed to wrestle the lead away from the No. 11 Nittany Lions (24-26, 10-12 Big Ten), who will face third-seeded Nebraska in the quarterfinals on Thursday. After Iowa pitcher Jalen Adams retired the side in order in the first inning, Penn State came alive in the second with a pair of runs.

IOWA CITY — Penn State jumped on Iowa right out of the gate. A lead-off single followed by a double in the Nittany Lions’ second at-bat put a pair of runners in scoring position. A single in the fourth at-bat drove in one base runner and a throwing error added another. Talia Tretton managed to induce a fly out and ground out to escape the inning without any further damage.
