For the former Karen Michel and Loras Watters, the third time was the charm. Karen Michel — now Karen Watters — grew up on a farm near Zwingle, Iowa, while Loras grew up in Bellevue, Iowa. For rural Jackson County teenagers in the early 1960s, dances were the social glue that held them all together. Barn dances, community dances and family celebrations were always well-attended. In the spring of 1961, Loras attended his cousin’s graduation party. Karen, who was a friend of his cousin, was there, too.
